TAKING ON THE STIGMA OF SUBSTANCE USE DISORDER

The stigma associated with addiction is still often preventing those who need help from seeking treatment. We partnered with the Vermont Department of Health on a project that started with deep, foundational research and strategy development—and then continued into the creation of a multimedia campaign that would help increase the understanding of substance use disorder as a health issue.

For the creative core of the campaign, we interviewed people from across Vermont to capture their stories and perspectives. Some of them had personally dealt with substance use, others were family members of people who have struggled with this disease.

These stories became the first-person narrative in our TV and video executions, while unscripted statements made during the interviews became the headlines for our social and digital campaign elements.

In the end, this campaign treats everyone affected by substance use disorder as an individual worthy of empathy and understanding.
